The Sringeri temple in Karnataka is dedicated to goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music, art and wisdom. Founded by Sri Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, the original idol of the deity was made of wood known as Sharada Parameshwari. In the 14th century, Guru Vidyashankara replaced it with a golden statue of the goddess in padmasana, holding a pustaka, japa mala, chinmudra and amruta kalasa in each of her four hands. Replicated in black stone (Krishna Shila), crafted by hand and hand colored by temple artisans of Karnataka, sculpting temple idols through generations down 400 years.
